There are some situations when there is a need for an early weaning. For example, when sometimes sow gets sick or needs to be transferred for some other reasons, or when there are too many piglets that we need to rearrange. How to proceed in those scenarios? Where to transfer those piglets?

One of the options would be to add a nurse sow, or to foster off those piglets to another lactating sow. However this is not always a choice, and the farm uses artificial resources to keep the piglets, therefore there are automatic feeding devices. In Brazil we call it an 'automatic nurse sow', and here we suggest the best way to handle it system wisely.

Let's work on those scenarios:

Farrow to Finish and Farrow to Nursery Farms

The sow F008 has 15 piglets, which need to be weaned earlier than usual.

  • What to do with the Sow?

Entry the weaning, and add a specific destination group (artificial).

Identify the name of the group and set also an identified location in order to make it easy to know the group and the location for those specific purpose.

This way the sow will be empty and can return to be mated again or be used as a nurse sow for other piglets.

  • What to do with those piglets?

Those recent weaned piglets will be on this group which has been fed with a special care until the real weaning date.

After they reach the proper weight or age, they need to be transferred to the current weaned group where they will be sold or transferred to finishing stage.

Farrow to wean + fallout pigs farms

A sow with 10 piglets, which I need to wean earlier than usual

  • What to do with the sow?

Record the weaning by creating a specific destination group  (artificial).

Identify by the name of the group to make it easier to see the purpose of this specific group.

After that, the sow will be empty and can return to be mated again or used as a nurse sow.

  • What to do with the piglets?

Those recent weaned piglets will be on this group which has been fed with a special care until the real weaning date, and then they can be sold. Those piglets should not go to fallout pigs unless there are some specific concerns   with one of them, such as a hernia or a longer time do gain the proper weight desired. After the weight is reached for sale, simply enter the sale of the group.
